Christmas gift for a Young Prepper
If you’re looking for a gift to help involve your children in survival and preparedness, you should check out this book. The American Boys Handy Book is a very dated (circa 1882) but still entertaining collection of projects and games, with practical directions on how to make them.
This book harkens back to an age before the Nintendo Wii and DVR’ed television, and can help your children become interested in outdoor activities and skills.
Written by one of the founders of the Boy Scouts of America, this book contains some very interactive crafts that will get your kids off of the couch when they complain that they are bored or have “nothing to do.”
This book contains practical survival techniques that can still be used today, such as:
-Multiple ways of fishing
-How to make your own fishing tackle
-How to tie some essential knots and bends
-How to make your own hunting gear
-How to snare and trap using deadfalls
and
-How to camp without a tent
The American Boys Handy Book also contains many items that are simply fun and that in a survival situation can be a creative way to keep their minds active and stave off boredom, such as:
-Building kites
- Puppet making
-Proper etiquette for snowball warfare
and
-Training your dog
This book is large, and at 440 pages contains hours or practical and fun things to do.
I will warn you that the book is quite dated and may be difficult for some children to understand. It will allow for you to spend some vital bonding time with your children. While most kids now think of a book in much the same way as they do a pair of socks for Christmas, any that have even an inkling of interest in the outdoors will cherish this collection.

This sounds like it would be a good book for some adults who have no idea how to do a lot of the things you say are taught in the book, or at the least to buy for your kids and read with them. A lot of adults have no idea how to do much of what you speak of in the first part of this review. Myself included.

Thank you for the response Gena, like I said the book is a bit dated but if things get really bad we will be right back in that time period and it is good to know how to do certain things without the use of technology. Let me know what you think of the book if you decide to purchase it!
